In São Paulo’s Vila Madalena, COTA760 Arquitetura has transformed an existing apartment into a warm and flexible home. The renovation opened up the former compartmentalised layout, connecting living, dining and cooking into one continuous social space.
The kitchen definitely takes centre stage. In terms of material use, the project draws on architectural memories of São Paulo. This resulted in the designers’ reinterpretation of two familiar Brazilian elements: cobogó blocks and caquinhos ceramic tiles. In the kitchen, these materials’ terracotta tones create a bold visual core, complemented by a brushed red Brasília granite worktop. But the cobogós do more than add texture. They filter light, encourage ventilation and create subtle boundaries between the kitchen and utility spaces. All of this makes the kitchen feel both contemporary and connected to its roots.
