Tivoli Gardens has been part of Copenhagen’s cultural landscape since its opening in 1843. Now, the historic pleasure garden enters a new chapter with Hikari, a 2,000 m² district inspired by Japan.
The new neighbourhood interprets Japan’s architectural principles through Tivoli’s own lens. Japanese expertise, traditional materials and precise details give the area a sense of authenticity, from solid timber elements and bricks sourced from Japan to traditional artworks and artefacts. Light is at the heart of it all, which is no coincidence, with Hikari, meaning “light”, as its name. The result is an intriguing blend of cultures: almost two hundred years of Tivoli tradition viewed through a contemporary Japanese lens.
